Resolution Against Attacks on Transgender Healthcare
Adopted by the Joint Council October 21, 2025
WHEREAS the GOP is demanding unlawful discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the ongoing federal shutdown funding negotiations, with transgender people particularly targeted in the form of a demand for a ban on federal funding for gender-affirming care (1);
WHEREAS these demands are in direct violation of the equality of trans and queer people, as well as the scientific consensus surrounding the life-saving nature of gender-affirming care (2);
WHEREAS the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys (ALAA) has consistently fought for our trans community, including by winning gender neutral restrooms in Legal Aid Society offices (3);
WHEREAS ALAA recognize that descent into fascism often involves weaponization of the most marginalized members of society,
WHEREAS some of the first violent acts of Nazism included violent repression of trans and queer individuals, including a massive book burning at the world’s first clinic for transgender individuals on May 10, 1933 (4);
Be it resolved that ALAA shall:
Call upon the Democrats and independents of the Senate and the House of Representatives to vote against any funding bills that place restrictions on gender-affirming care, the equality of trans people, or the equality of any LGBTQ+ people;
Continue to rebuke all efforts to demonize trans individuals and stands strongly in solidarity with our trans members, clients, and community members.
